- What of my work should I present?
- How could I break my poster presentation down to three minutes?
- How do I structure myself and my slides?
These questions, and many more, are answered in this workshop. This is meant to prepare you for the annual Poster Flash and on-site poster presentation during the Graduate School Day, but not only that. You also get some tool to structure yourself and your topic to better handle any talk you have to give.
The workshop consists of one online lesson for the basics of presenting, slide design, and simplification and an on-site workshop were the tools from the online lesson are refined, exercises for being on stage and public speaking are done, as well as some examples from good practices in the STEM and medical fields.
The workshops are held by Dr. rer. nat. André Lampe, he is a physicist working as a Postdoc at the Advanced Medical BIOimaging Core Facility of the Charité Berlin (AMBIO), and also a lecturer on science communication, live-streamer and former TV-host.

The workshop is intended primarily for new PhD candidates whose background or roots are outside Germany. It is rather meant as a welcome initiative to help ease the transition into doctoral studies and academic and social life in Germany. It gives insights into German everyday and work culture and techniques for dealing with them.

The lecture and practical course is for persons involved in the use of animals for scientific purposes to achieve competence in the sense of animal welfare and according to the German Animal Welfare Law (TierSchG §7). The local authority (LAVES) will provide a “certificate of exemption” only after successful attention of the theoretical plus practical module.
The 2-day theoretical module includes the topics: Legal aspects (including national legislation), basics in anatomy and physiology of different laboratory animal species, application of substances, anesthesia, operation and perioperative care, blood collection, euthanasia, basics in genetics, nomenclature and breeding management, husbandry, labelling, health monitoring and hygienic requirements. Learning outcome will be assessed by a written exam.
In the 2-day practical course basic skills will be obtained: propaedeutics, handling (mouse, rat, guinea pig), anatomy and physiology, application and blood sample collection techniques, humane killing, sample collection, anesthesia, labelling of laboratory animals, documentation.

Die Vorlesung richtet sich an Studierende naturwissenschaftlicher Studiengänge, Studierende der Human- und Zahnmedizin sowie an diejenige, die in Tierversuchen mitwirken wollen. Die Vorlesung vermittelt an insgesamt 12 Terminen umfangreiches Wissen zu den Themen Versuchstiere und Versuchstierkunde. An einem 13. Termin wird das erworbene Wissen in Form einer Klausur abgefragt. Die Teilnahme an der Klausur ist nur mit maximal einem Fehltermin möglich. Ein versäumter Vorlesungstermin kann im Folgesemester nachgeholt werden.
Die erfolgreiche Teilnahme an der Vorlesung ist Voraussetzung für die Teilnahme am „Grundmodul Tierexperimentelle Techniken“: Das praktische Grundmodul vermittelt Grundkenntnisse zu folgenden Themengebieten: Propädeutik, Handling von Tieren (Maus, Ratte, Meerschweinchen), Anatomie und Physiologie, Techniken zur Applikation und Probenentnahme, tierartgerechtes Töten, Narkoseführung, Techniken zur Markierung von Versuchstieren, Dokumentation.
Für die erfolgreiche Teilnahme an der Vorlesung und dem „Grundmodul Tierexperimentelle Techniken“ wird eine Bescheinigung als Nachweis der erworbenen Sachkunde (TierSchG §7) ausgestellt.

Basic and recent developments in reproductive biology, assisted reproduction techniques, and breeding strategies are discussed. Students in the first year Focus Programme Reproduction choose a topic to do an own seminar. At the beginning of the 90 min lecture, the professor gives a 45 min introductory talk followed by a 30 min presentation of one student. The lecture will end up with a 15 min discussion open to the auditorium.

This course aims to provide hands-on learning in labs with focus on specific state-of-the-art techniques that are relevant or of individual interest for the PhD student. Experienced lecturers and scientists provide the benefits of live, in-person training. Extensive training is provided by the labs.
This course thereby also stimulates cooperations among scientists between different HGNI-institutions or cooperating labs.

The students gain experience on specific state-of-the-art techniques, which are relevant for infection research. The course includes
• background knowledge about the principles of the technique
• practical hands-on-training including trouble shooting
• user examples on scientific application of the respective technique.
