The VIPER research and training program will cover the global chain of events involved in virus emergence, all the way from virus discovery, isolation, molecular characterization, surveillance, and pathogenesis, towards animal and public health impact and intervention strategies including new approaches for prevention and control.

Existing ventilation systems in open barns always pose challenges for turkey fatteners, especially in the cold seasons. In order to ensure a sufficient influx of fresh air, the blinds in open barns must be opened even in cold, damp weather. With this form of gravity ventilation, the cold, moist air enters directly into the animal area. As a result, the risk for the occurrence of respiratory diseases and the development of damp litter increases. Therefore, within the framework of this project, the use of a new type of ventilation system in open barns is to be tested in cooperation between turkey fatteners, consultants and science. By modifying existing ventilation systems in open barns, the input of cold supply air is to be reduced without causing a deterioration of the barn climate. In addition, "drinking bars"" will be set up in a second step. This restructuring of the barn interior is intended to create larger resting areas for the animals. At the same time, the aim is to reduce the area where wet litter can occur due to increased water entry. "

Project Details:
Tierwohl in der Nutztierhaltung ist ein kontrovers diskutiertes Thema. Gleichzeitig ist die Informationslage zum Stand des Tierwohls äußerst gering. Daten zu tierbezogenen Indikatoren für alle relevanten Gesundheitsbereiche (z.B. Lahmheiten, Verletzungen), Tierverhalten und Emotionen, zu ressourcenbezogenen Indikatoren (z.B. Platzangebot, Haltungsverfahren) und managementbezogenen Indikatoren (z.B. Eingriffe an den Tieren, Fütterung, Dauer der Säugeperiode) liegen kaum bzw. nur vereinzelt und nicht systematisch erhoben, vor. Zwar werden für die terrestrischen Nutztiere einige Daten, aus denen sich Aussagen zum Gesundheitsstatus der Tier und zu einzelnen Aspekten des Tierwohls ableiten lassen, regelmäßig erhoben (z.B. Schlachtbefunde, Antibiotikaverbrauch, Herkunftssicherungs- und Informationssystem für Tiere, Milchleistungsprüfung), sie können bisher aber nicht systematisch und im Zusammenhang ausgewertet werden. Gründe hierfür sind, dass die Daten nicht standardisiert erhoben werden und dadurch nicht vergleichbar sind, nur bestimmte Produktionsrichtungen und Tierarten erfasst werden oder keine Rechtsgrundlage für eine Tierwohl-bezogene Auswertung vorliegt. Ziel des Projektes ist es, die Grundlagen für ein regelmäßiges, indikatorengestütztes Monitoring und eine Berichterstattung über den Status des Tierwohls in der Nutztierhaltung in Deutschland sowie dessen Veränderung über die Zeit zu erarbeiten. Dieses Tierwohl-Monitoring soll die verschiedenen Dimensionen des Tierwohls in den relevanten Lebensabschnitten der Tiere (Haltung, Transport, Schlachtung) berücksichtigen. Neben den wichtigen terrestrischen Nutztieren (Rinder, Schweine, Geflügel) wird auch die Aquakultur einbezogen.

Project Details:
The aims of this project are to: determine the limits of the distribution M. gerpi by sampling captured mouse lemurs at varying distances from Sahafina; we use molecular methods to confirm the taxonomic status of all captured mouse lemurs in the study region; determine the sensitivity of M. gerpi to habitat degradation; and based on these findings, formulate recommendations for this species' effective conservation. The chief outcomes of the project will be 1) clarification of the distribution of M. gerpi, and 2) formulation of a conservation action plan for M. gerpi, which will be used to update its IUCN status, and which will be enacted through separately-funded conservation activities including community outreach.

Ziel des Projektes ist es, verschiedene Aspekte zu untersuchen und dabei Hündinnen mit Wehenschwäche mit solchen zu vergleichen, bei denen keine Wehenschwächte vorliegt.

Project Details:
Medical research on diseases mediated by microbial organisms has been severely hindered by reliable strain identification. The main reason simply is: More than 90% of all microorganisms have not been identified yet and traditional identification methods have routinely been grouping genetically diverse strains into the same category. Can one understand the differences in action between arsenic enriched water and normal tap water (which look the same) if you think they are the same? The answer is no, it would be better to have a reliable unambiguous identification system for all clear liquids, no matter how small the difference. Such a system has been developed in a multi-million research network run by scientists at the AMNH, New York. This system is known as CAOS barcoding and has been successfully tested for example on insect species delimitation, insect vectors, mammals, symbiontic bacteria, rumen microflora, virus strains and others. The barcodes can be identified centrally in our lab at TiHo Hannover (and in collaboration with the AMNH, NY). The barcodes are given to the authors and the community in a web-based, easy to use data platform.

Project Details:
Animal mummies from the collections of the Roemer and Pelizaeus Museum (Hildesheim) and the Museum August Kestner (Hanover) are to be examined using X-rays and computed tomography (CT). Based on the CT data, 3D prints of anatomical structures are to be created. The aim is to identify the mummified species as well as artificial changes and diseases in the animals.
A joint DFG application (after preliminary studies), special exhibitions in the participating museums and scientific publications are planned.
