Title: Scientific investigation of seals released in accordance with animal welfare regulations, especially with regard to infectious diseases & zoonotic potentials as well as the scientific training of personnel of the stranding network for the North and Baltic Seas of Schleswig-Holstein
The harbor seal is the most common marine mammal species in Schleswig-Holstein and causes the most call-outs for seal hunters. In the last three decades, seal populations have experienced several major epizootics, but have subsequently grown in size again. In recent years, however, it has been observed that this growth has stagnated and younger seals in particular are disappearing from the populations.
Seals can be carriers of infectious agents such as the Phocine distemper virus, influenza viruses, brucella and erysipelas, some of which can have fatal consequences for the individual animal or the population. These infectious agents are often zoonotic in nature and can promote secondary infections with other pathogens such as Bordetella bronchiseptica or toxoplasmosis.
In addition to comprehensive pathological examinations of the seals, microbiological, virological and parasitological examinations will also be carried out in this project.
Particular attention will be paid to the young animals in order to check whether there may be health related reasons for their decline. For this purpose, a representative number of all seals handed in by seal hunters from the North and Baltic Seas will be selected and subjected to complete post-mortems and further examinations.
The scientific findings will be directly incorporated into the work of the seal hunters, who will receive regular training in the detection of diseases and the handling of marine mammals. Hygiene measures and documentation materials will be developed and reviewed, and accident prevention training will be provided. To this end, a scientific exchange with the seal hunters will take place throughout the entire research project period.

In relation to the human-induced biodiversity crisis, we are organizing a semester-long elective module in the Bachelor's degree program in Biology on insect diversity in the city with data collection in the urban environment of the students.
Online educational resources (OERs) are created for this module as a guide for both students and lecturers and published on twillo (https://www.twillo.de/oer/web/). The collected data will be published on an online platform (www.colkat.de) and published in an entomological journal.

Project Details:
The aim of project is to gain deeper insights into how altered FSH secretion due to GnRH agonist SRI treatment affects FSHR expression, but also how it affects SSC self-renewal, differentiation and proliferation using the dog as a model.
SSC are crucial for male fertility as they sustain spermatogenesis, the continuous process of sperm production, ensuring the maintenance of reproductive function and genetic diversity. Understanding their regulation is essential for addressing fertility issues and reproductive medicine. Besides, the aim is to investigate to what extent the SSC niche is altered, namely how RA and RA generating enzymes are affected by altered peripheral FSH secretion.
For the current project dogs were treated over 5 months with a GnRH slow release implant (SRI); after 5 months the SRI was removed and groups of dogs were surgically castrated at the time of implant removal (week 0) and 3, 6, 9, 12 and 24 weeks later, respectively representing either downregulated/arrested spermatogenesis or restart of spermatogenesis at various time points. Besides, untreated healthy male and 2 month-old juvenile dogs served as controls. All samples have been previously characterised in detail within earlier projects.
As FSH is significantly reduced during downregulation and fully restored rapidly after SRI removal, these testicular samples collected during downregulation and subsequent recovery seem to be a promisining model to study effects of altered FSH signaling on SSCs and their niche in a non-rodent model.

Die erworbene Unfruchtbarkeit aufgrund von nicht-obstruktiver Azoospermie stellt die Hauptursache für die chronische asymptomatische Orchitis (CAO) dar, eine sehr häufige Diagnose beim infertilen Rüden, aber auch beim Menschen. CAO assoziiert sind hochgradige histologische Veränderungen, wie ein Arrest der Spermatogenese sowie eine signifikante Infiltration mit Immunzellen. Die auslösende Noxe ist in der Regel unbekannt, eine Vorstellung des Patienten erfolgt meist spät und Therapiemöglichkeiten bestehen bislang nicht. Neben der Identifizierung der Immunzellen und Charakterisierung der exprimierten Entzündungsmarker konnten mittlerweile in der AG auch die Existenz resilienter Stammzellen in Hoden von an CAO leidenden azoospermen Rüden nachgewiesen werden. Es erscheint naheliegend, dass im Zusammenhang mit der CAO auch die Sertolizellfunktion gestört ist - oder möglicherweise die Störung der Funktion kausal zu sehen ist. Sertolizellen spielen eine wichtige Rolle für das Hodenmikromilieu und somit die funktionierende Spermatogenese. Um die Entwicklung, Anzahl und Funktion der Sertoli-Zellen zu untersuchen, wird die Expression verschiedener Marker in gesunden und von CAO betroffenen Hoden ausgewertet. Grundsätzlich soll mithilfe dieses Projekts ein weiterer Störungspunkt im CAO betroffenen Hoden aufzeigt und definiert werden, um zukünftige therapeutische Ansätze in den Sertoli-Zellen für die Wiederaufnahme der Spermatogenese zu ermöglichen.

Project Details:
The nature reserve and European bird sanctuary "Voslapper Groden Süd" (NSG WE 246) is an important breeding area for ground-nesting birds. According to the Lower Nature Conservation Authority of the City of Wilhelmshaven, wild boar Sus scrofa are found there in large numbers. The breeding success of the ground-nesting birds was "zero" in spring 2018.

The wild boar population figures were therefore recorded in the fall of 2018 and the city of Wilhelmshaven was given expert advice on wild boar management. Following a court ruling in October 2019, no order to eliminate the wild boar could be issued until the nature reserve was completely fenced in and the population was subsequently reassessed. As a result, the population figures were recorded in the fall of 2019 for monitoring purposes.

After completion of the south fence, the UNB WHV commissioned the Institute for Terrestrial and Aquatic Wildlife Research at the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover Foundation to carry out two further surveys on the wildlife population in the WE 246 nature reserve on 16/08/2022 and 10/10/2023.

Results:

The task of the current assignment was to carry out a new population survey and provide expert advice on the management of the wild boar population and an evaluation of the measures taken to date in the Voslapper Groden Süd VSG. To this end, the presence, age class composition, density and spatial-temporal distribution of wild boar were determined. In addition, hunting facilities, the fences enclosing the area and other factors relevant to management were considered. The presence and densities of other mammal species were also recorded.

Etwa 30% aller Epilepsie-Patienten gelten als pharmakoresistent, d.h. sie zeigen Anfälle trotz optimal eingesetzter Anfallssuppressiva (Antiepileptika). Klinisch angewendete Alternativen zur systemischen Pharmakotherapie sind limitiert, z.B. die chirurgische Fokusresektion durch multifokale Epilepsien oder durch eine unklare Fokuslage. Die Entwicklung alternativer Behandlungsstrategien wie der intrazerebralen Pharmakotherapie mit einer zielgerichteten Modulation fokusferner Schlüsselregionen des epileptischen Netzwerks stellt daher eine bedeutsame Herausforderung in der Epilepsietherapie dar. Unter Umgehung der Blut-Hirn-Schranke können dabei lokal im Gehirn höhere Wirkstoffkonzentrationen erreicht werden und dabei systemische Nebenwirkungen minimiert werden. Ziel des Projekts ist die Weiterentwicklung der intrazerebralen Mikroinfusion rational ausgewählter Wirkstoffe mit unterschiedlichem Wirkmechanismus zur zielgerichteten Behandlung pharmakoresistenter Epilepsien. In dieser präklinischen Studie wird das für den Hund eingesetzte Anfallssuppressivum Imepitoin intrasubthalamisch infundiert und die Effekte auf Anfallsschwellen unf Verhalten untersucht.

Project Details:
Studierenden der Tiermedizin soll eine Kategorisierungsstrategie für die Haltungsumgebung und Erkrankungen von Schweinen bereits in den ersten beiden Fachsemestern vermittelt werden, um in den späteren Semestern erworbenes Wissen zur Nutztiermedizin besser einordnen und damit besser lernen zu können. Damit wird auf fehlendes landwirtschaftliches Vorwissen der Studierenden und auf den Mangel an Nachwuchs für die Nutztiermedizin reagiert. Die Lehreinheit fokussiert sich auf die technischen Bedingungen in der Stallumgebung (z.B. Fütterungstechnik, Bodenbeschaffenheit), welche die Tiergesundheit maßgeblich beeinflussen. Diese bleiben den Studierenden bisher besonders fremd, sofern sie nicht auf einem landwirtschaftlichen Betrieb aufgewachsen sind. Es sollen dafür vier unterschiedliche Haltungssysteme für Schweine als 360°-Rundgänge gefilmt, für die interaktive Tourengestaltung vorbereitet und mit Informationsmaterial hinterlegt werden. Dazu wird jeweils ein klinischer Fall so aufgearbeitet, dass nur ein offener Blick sowie technischer und biologischer Grundverstand, der ab Studienbeginn vorausgesetzt werden kann, nötig sind, um die Arbeitsaufgabe im Sinne einer Schnitzeljagd zu lösen, bzw. das Grundproblem zu identifizieren. Alle Informationen, die darüberhinausgehend benötigt werden, um den Fall zu lösen, werden an Infopunkten zur Verfügung gestellt. Die Lernkontrolle erfolgt anhand eines weiteren Falls in einer der virtuellen Stallumgebungen ohne Infopunkte und wird asynchron durch den Lehrenden bewertet.

The aim of the project is a survey of the local grey seal population in the entire Lower Saxony and Hamburg Wadden Sea during the birthing season (November-December) 2023 and at the time of the fur change (March-April) 2024.
On five trilaterally coordinated dates (three during the birthing season; two during the fur-change period), airborne surveys will be conducted with a single-engine aircraft. During the aerial surveys of the tidal flats, a high-resolution SLR camera will be used to photograph the haul-outs. In order to determine the number of young born as well as the total population, the photos taken are subsequently analyzed on the computer.

Many of the pollutants present in water have the potential to accumulate in aquatic organisms (bioaccumulation). So-called biota investigations have therefore become an integral part of the European Water Framework Directive (EC-WFD) and have established themselves as an important instrument in water monitoring. Against this background, the NLWKN has been carrying out extensive investigations in biota for more than 10 years, among other things within the framework of a special measuring program unique in Germany, in order to detect potential water pollution by bioaccumulating substances at an early stage. Currently, more than 1000 individual substances, including, among others, pesticides, PFAS, plasticizers, flame retardants, PAHs, organotins, dioxins and elements.
It is also known that many pollutants (e.g. PFAS) accumulate in organisms primarily through the ingestion of contaminated food (biomagnification) and that the highest measured values can accordingly be expected at the end of the food chain or at the top of the food pyramid. This is also reflected, for example, by the existing biota environmental quality standards for mercury, dicofol, hexachlorobutadiene and hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDD), as these were derived for the protected good "secondary poisoning of top predators (wildlife)".
The aim of the project applied for here is the one-time extension of the biota monitoring to organisms with an aquatic connection and as high a trophic level as possible (ideally piscivores, such as otter, comoran, osprey, pike/pike-perch, seal, harbor porpoise).
