ORCID - an ID for science

The ORCID iD (Open Research and Contributor ID) is a permanent, personal and internationally recognised digital identifier (ID) that uniquely links researchers with their publications.

Since 2020, the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover (TiHo) Foundation has been participating in the non-profit organisation ORCID through the Germany Consortium and thus supports the publication activities of its members and affiliates.

In your ORCID profile, you can list your publications and scientific achievements, as well as provide information about your current institutional affiliation and academic career.

Benefits and rights

ORCID supports you and the university in making research more visible and better connected.

With your own ORCID profile:

  • your scientific results can be clearly assigned - despite name variants, - changes and different spellings.
  • you can present your scientific work publicly, independent of employers and research fields or the evidence in databases (e.g. Web of Science or PubMed).
  • you can communicate effectively and with less effort with publishers and partners when submitting articles as well as research proposals and reports.

With ORCID, you have full control over the public visibility of profile details. Only the name and iD are always public. Only you decide which rights you grant to service providers ("Trusted Parties" or "Trusted Organisations") and which publications are displayed. You can change or completely revoke the granting of these rights at any time.

Registration and usage

You can create a free ORCID at any time by registering at www.orcid.org. Add all spellings and variants of your name. The more information you provide, the more meaningful your profile will be! Tip: Check beforehand by doing a search whether you already have an ORCID through an earlier registration.

Activate the automatic synchronisation of your publications by linking TiHo-eLib, CrossRef and DataCite to your ORCID profile. We also recommend linking Web of Science and Scopus if your publications are listed in these databases.

Let ORCID work for you!

You can make the TiHo library your "Trusted Party". This means that we and our technical service provider, the Head Office GBV (VZG) (Verbundzentrale des GBV (VZG)), support you in maintaining your personal publication list. Thus, publications registered in the TiHo eLib can be automatically transferred to your ORCID profile.

Glossary

CrossRef and DataCite are non-profit organisations that take care of identifiers for scientific publications (DOI). If data messages from cooperation partners (e.g. publishers or repositories) contain your ORCID, the associated publications are automatically imported into your ORCID profile. Therefore, always include your ORCID when submitting publications.

The ResearcherID and the Scopus Author ID are identifiers for persons in the Web of Science and Scopus databases respectively. They are linked to a commercial provider and are therefore not independent and valid across institutions and products.
