Research profile of the TiHo

The TiHo is broadly positioned and works on basic and application-oriented research topics up to clinical research.

In this context, the "One Health" topic plays a major role. The scientists of the TiHo deal in their research projects with socially relevant issues in the field of TiHo`s main research topics

  • infection medicine with neuroinfectiology,
  • animal health and food quality or
  • biodiversity

and contribute to animal welfare in many fields and topics. This also applies to the cross-focus topic of alternative and supplementary methods to animal experiments.

Many of the existing research projects already cover the topics of the new EU concept of the "European Green Deal".

To intensify cooperation in more complex research projects, the TiHo has several so-called "virtual" centers (without legal form and as a cross-institutional association of working groups under technical aspects), in which other research institutions are integrated in addition to clinics and institutes of the TiHo: Virtual Center for Infection Medicine, for Systemic Neuroscience, for Reproductive Medicine, for Animal Health and Food Quality, and for Replacement and Complementary Methods to Animal Experiments.

Third-party revenues for research (excluding service revenues) amount to approximately 25% of the state's financial aid plus grants. The main sources of third-party funding are the DFG, BMBF, other federal ministries and the EU, as well as clients in the context of contract research.
