The Ankarafantsika National Park and the Mariarano forest contain different habitat types, including xerophytic forests, dry deciduous forests, semi-humid gallery forests along rivers or lake shores, coastal mangrove forests (Mariarano) and secondary vegetation formations that may develop after bushfires or selective wood extraction. This mosaic of habitat types offers many different ecological niches for lemurs and other forest dwelling organisms. Both forests are unique in northwestern Madagascar by harboring five endangered or critically endangered lemur species, one of which, the golden brown mouse lemur (Microcebus ravelobensis) was only recently described by our group in 1998. Moreover, the Ankarafantsika National Park comprises the largest remaining continuous patch of dry deciduous forest in northwestern Madagascar and is therefore of utmost importance for the longterm preservation of biodiversity in this biogeographic zone. Knowledge on the environmental flexibility of lemurs is still in its infancy, but urgently needed for conservation management. The aim of this longterm programme is to study the conservation biology of these lemur species, including their vulnerability towards diseases, at sites, for which we already have basic data. This knowledge will help to understand the environmental flexibility of species, how macrogeographic events such as climate change affect lemur?s life history and long-term survival and provide empirical data for long-term conservation management of lemurs in northwestern Madagascar.

The evolution of different forms of parental care is an important topic in behavioral ecology, and it involves complex suites of associated parental and offspring traits. For example, some parents provide nourishment or selection and protection of suitable nesting sites for offspring. Understanding how memory guides individuals to locate or return to a reproductive resource is one of the major challenges in studies of animal behavior. During parental care, poison frogs routinely transport their tadpoles from terrestrial clutches to suitable deposition sites, and some individuals return to supply their offspring with nutritive unfertilized eggs. Thus, these frogs rely on spatial memory to exploit resources important for successful reproduction. However, it is unknown how the spatial abilities are related to the parental care traits performed by an individual. The aim of this study is to investigate behavioral spatial strategies and their genetic basis in the strawberry poison-dart frog, Oophaga pumilio. To investigate the spatial strategies in the context of parental care we aim examining ability of females and males to find a goal in a plus maze under experimental conditions. Moreover, we will determine the possible genes involved in spatial learning through gene expression analysis (RNASeq) of the pallium, the brain region known to be involved in spatial learning. Since females perform most parental care duties involving navigation in large home ranges, we expect females to have better spatial abilities than males.

The study of the evolutionary processes that originate phenotypic diversity can offer insights into the process of adaptation in natural populations. Coloration patterns variation have intrigued scientists for centuries, and among vertebrates amphibians are one of the most interesting groups, exhibiting a vast variation in coloration, whose function has been mainly associated with UV protection, interspecies communication, and predator avoidance. Despite significant advances made on this topic, the genetic basis of coloration in amphibians is still surprisingly unknown. Herein we propose to deepen in genomic bases of coloration in the genus Brachycephalus, using the aposematic and polymorphic species B. actaeus as model. We are going to use transcriptomic data to identify genes, which are differentially expressed as well as histological sample for gathering information about chromatophore abundance and distribution among colour morphs in this species.

Different types of glial cells are present in the nervous system. These cells perform many different functions. For example, microglial cells are involved in immune-responses and synapse formation, while oligodendrocytes are important for insulating axons supporting rapid, long-distance voltage signalling in neurons. During early and late postnatal development, the nervous system undergoes alterations in neuronal morphologies, connectivities and functions. From the various glial functions, it can be inferred that also their shape and function changes during this life span. The quantification of the developmental alterations in glial cells together with the knowledge about neuronal, developmental changes will therefore shed light on the functional interactions between neurons and glial cells. It is best to quantify the development of glial cells in a well-defined neuronal structure, because glial cell densities and orientation can be matched to a defined area and spatial axis. The superior olivary complex in the auditory system offers such a well-defined neuronal structure. Our project aims to determine the cell number of microglia and oligodendrocytes in distinct auditory nuclei during postnatal development. The microglial shape will be quantified and their spatial orientation determined. The number of oligodendrocyte-neuron connections will be analysed in a developmental manner. We will find out whether glial development is adapted to neuronal maturation in specific nuclei or follows an general time course.

Die Katze gehört zu den beliebtesten Haustieren Deutschlands. Obwohl Katzen eine lange Domestikationsgeschichte mit uns Menschen verbindet, ist unser Wissen über ihre generellen sozialen und kognitiven Fähigkeiten, ihre Kommunikation sowie ihre soziale Bindung an den Menschen noch lückenhaft. Während die Forschung an Hunden einen starken Einfluss der Domestikation auf das Sozialverhalten und die kognitiven Fähigkeiten der Tiere gezeigt hat, ist unser Wissen wie sich die Domestizierung von Katzen auf deren sozialen und kognitiven Fähigkeiten ausgewirkt hat noch wenig erforscht. Es wird allgemein angenommen, dass Katzen sich "selbst domestiziert" haben, indem sie ihren Beutetieren (Nagetieren) in menschliche Siedlungen gefolgt sind. Dabei geht man davon aus, dass vor allem die mutigeren Katzen eng mit den Menschen zusammenlebten, welche von ihren Jagdfähigkeiten profitierten. Dies unterscheidet sich von der Domestizierung des Hundes, der aktiv vom Menschen domestiziert wurde. Diese unterschiedliche Domestikationshistorie hat vermutlich auch einen Einfluss auf die heutigen Interaktionen zwischen Katzen bzw. Hunden und Menschen.
In diesem Projekt wollen wir die auf den Menschen ausgerichtete Kommunikation von Katzen sowie die soziale Bindung von Katzen an ihre Besitzer untersuchen. Uns interessiert, ob Katzen auch eine Art "Eifersuchtverhalten" zeigen wie Hunde bzw. ob und wie sie um ihren Besitzer konkurrieren. Des Weiteren untersuchen wir welchen Einfluss Faktoren wie Unterbringung (Innenkatzen, Außenkatzen), Geschlecht und hormoneller Status (kastriert, nicht kastriert) auf die sozialen Interaktionen zwischen Katzen und zwischen Katzen und Menschen haben.

The intermediate nuclei of the lateral lemniscus (INLL) is one of the three nuclei of the lateral lemniscus that process and relay auditory information between the cochlear nucleus, the superior olivary complex and the auditory midbrain. While the function of the other two lemniscal nuclei is at least partially understood the involvement of the INLL in sound processing is largely unknown. Moreover, the transmitter type of INLL neurons seem species specific, as rodents and bats are labelled for glutamatergic and glycinergic markers respectively. From animal models that hear well below and above 2 kHz, like humans, hardly any functional data from this auditory brainstem structure is available. The present anatomical and functional data of the INLL indicates that it might be involved in the integration of auditory information between different frequencies. Such a cross-frequency integration is key process for generating the neuronal representation of our auditory environment. To elucidate the filter functions and functional role of the INLL we propose to investigate the sound processing features of this auditory structure with in vivo single unit electrophysiology. Initially, we will record acoustically evoked responses elicited by a battery of sound stimulations ranging from pure tones to conspecific calls. This stimulation battery allows us to characterize the basic processing features of INLL neurons. In the next step, we will determine the temporal and frequency dependent integration characteristics of INLL neurons. Our preliminary in vivo single unit recordings highlight the temporal filter functions by analyzing modulation transfer functions of stimulated transposed tones. In agreement with existing data from bat, we find evidence for integration of sounds between different sound frequencies. Obtaining deeper insights into the filter functions and integration characteristics will allow us to postulate functional roles of the INLL in sound processing. Finally, we plan to perform whole-cell in vivo recordings to gain mechanistic insight how INLL neurons achieve their processing tasks. Thus, this application will illuminate the functional role of an auditory brainstem structure that is well connected but hardly understood and therefore the proposal will substantially add to our understanding of sound processing and how we generate our auditory world in our brain.

Nicht-verbale akustische Hinweise in der menschlichen Stimme spielen eine Rolle bei der Koordinierung von Sexualverhalten und Partnerwahl. So korrelieren akustische Parameter der Stimme mit physischen Merkmalen des Senders, mit der Motivation des Senders und der Konzentration von Sexualhormonen im Sender. Studien an nicht-menschlichen Säugetieren zeigen ähnliche vokale Korrelate, so dass davon ausgegangen werden kann, dass auch bei nicht-menschlichen Säugetieren vokale Korrelate bedeutende proximate Aspekte für das Sexualverhalten und die Partnerwahl darstellen. Besonders bei Großsäugern ohne Paarungszeit, bei denen Männchen und Weibchen über lange Strecken getrennt leben und Weibchen nur eine geringe Anzahl an Nachkommen gebären, sollten diese vokalen Korrelate eine bedeutende Rolle spielen, um den besten Paarungspartner zum richtigen Zeitpunkt zu finden. Da es bisher nur wenige Daten für Großsäuger gibt, ist es das Ziel dieses Forschungsprojekt am Südlichen Breitmaulnashorn zu untersuchen, ob vokale Korrelate als proximate Ursache für das Sexualverhalten und die Partnerwahl existieren. Da es bisher für Nashörner keine Daten darüber gibt, ob es vokale Korrelate der Motivation des Senders als auch der Konzentration von Sexualhormonen im Sender gibt, und vokale Korrelate physischer Merkmale nur an einem Ruftyp untersucht wurden, besteht das Forschungsprojekt aus 4 Teilprojekten. Diese untersuchen, ob vokale Korrelate in Bezug auf (1) die physische Charakteristik des Senders, (2) die Motivation des Senders, (3) die Konzentration an Sexualhormonen im Sender existieren, und (4) ob Artgenossen die Fertilität eines Weibchens sowie die Qualität des männlichen Paarungspartners basierend auf deren Rufen erkennen können. Auf diese Weise könnten diese vokalen Korrelate potentiell die Paarungsqualität, die Paarungsbereitschaft als auch den reproduktiven Zustand signalisieren und somit eine bedeutende Rolle im Sexualverhalten dieser Tierart spielen. Durch den Vergleich der erzielten Ergebnisse mit Erkenntnissen über gruppenlebende Säugetierarten und/oder Säugetieren mit einer Paarungszeit, wird ein tieferer Einblick in die Bedeutung der akustischen Kommunikation für das Paarungsverhalten von Säugetieren ermöglicht und Erkenntnisse gewonnen, in welchem Maße das vokale Paarungsverhalten durch die Sozialität einer Art und/oder ihre Paarungsstrategie geformt wird. Somit werden die Ergebnisse dieses Forschungsprojektes helfen, die biologische Funktion und Prinzipien von vokalen Korrelaten der Stimme für das Paarungsverhalten von Säugetieren zu verstehen.

Die vokale Kommunikation spielt eine wichtige Rolle bei der Koordinierung sozialer Interaktionen. Vokalisationen vermitteln verschiedene Informationen über den Sender selbst (z. B. körperliche Merkmale, emotionaler Zustand) sowie über die Situation, in der sich der Sender befindet (z. B. Paarung, Mutter-Kind-Kommunikation). Man geht davon aus, dass Sozialität ein treibender Faktor bei der Entwicklung komplexer Kommunikationssysteme ist. Daher konzentrierten sich die meisten Studien zur akustischen Kommunikation auf Arten, die in komplexen sozialen Systemen leben. Aber auch Arten, die in weniger komplexen Systemen leben, müssen miteinander kommunizieren. Daher untersuchen wir in dieser Studie die vokale Kommunikation bei einer Säugetierart, die in einem weniger komplexen sozialen System lebt, dem Südlichen Breitmaulnashorn. Bei dieser Art bilden die Weibchen und die subadulten Tiere zeitlich stabile Gruppen, während die Bullen einzeln leben. Um einen Einblick in die vokale Komplexität zu erhalten, wird ein vokalen Repertoires ermittelt. Bislang gibt es zwei Veröffentlichungen über das vokale Repertoire des Breitmaulnashorns, in denen 10 bis 11 verschiedene Vokalisationen beschrieben wurden, die sich jedoch nur in fünf Ruftypen decken. Während Owen-Smith (1973) die Ruftypen nur anhand von lautmalerischen Beschreibungen bei freilebender Südlichen Breitmaulnashörnern charakterisierte, führten Policht et al. (2008) eine detaillierte multiparametrische Lautanalyse in Kombination mit statistischen Methoden an der letzten damals in menschlicher Obhut lebender Herde Nördlicher Breitmaulnashörner durch. Daher können auch Unterschiede in der Haltung und/oder bei den Unterarten die Ergebnisse beeinflussen. Um das vokale Repertoire des Südlichen Breitmaulnashorns zu klären und zu prüfen inwiefern Daten von Tieren, die in menschlicher Obhut gehalten werden, mit Tieren, die in ihren natürlichen Lebensräumen leben, vergleichbar sind, vergleichen wir das vokale Verhalten von Nashornherden in verschiedenen Zoos mit verschiedenen natürlichen Lebensräumen (Ziwa Rhino Sancatury, Botswana).

The increasing fragmentation of tropical rain forests, due to anthropogenic landscape changes, is an increasing problem for the biodiversity in this ecosystem. Changes of natural habitats affect individuals of different species in a variety of ways. Therefore, the knowledge of the ecological plasticity and sensitivity of a wide range of species is essential for empirically supported conservation efforts and management. Compared to large mammals, our knowledge about how small mammals are affected by habitat fragmentation is in its infancy. The aim of this study is to assess to what extent forest fragmentation influences the genetic diversity and gene flow among populations of small mammals by means of new methods in conservation genetics. Several small mammal communities from forest fragments of different size will be assessed in composition as well as diversity, and the species-specific abundance as well as the genetic structure of various model species will be studied in detail. The thereby acquired knowledge will help to get a better understanding of specific threats posed to small mammal communities due to forest fragmentation.

Die Sensitivität und Spezifität der Pheromonwahrnehmung hängt von den Rezeptoren im Epithelium des VNOs ab. Es wurden bisher zwei Familien von VNO Rezeptoren identifiziert, V1R und V2R. Die Diversität von VNO Rezeptoren ist in den verschiedenen Primatenfamilien wenig untersucht. Das Verständnis der Evolution des VNO ist entscheidend, um die adaptiven Veränderungen der relativen Relevanz verschiedener Sinnessysteme während der Evolution der Primaten zu verstehen. Aufgrund der zunehmenden Degeneration des VNOs und der Pseudogenisierung der V1R Gene bei höheren Affen ereignete sich die adaptive Evolution dieser Gene vermutlich sehr früh innerhalb der Stammesgeschichte der Primaten. Innerhalb dieses Forschungsprojekts werden die funktionellen VNO-Rezeptorgene von basalen Primaten, den Mausmakis (Microcebus spp.), isoliert und hinsichtlich ihrer Variabilität, Selektion und phylogenetischen Bedeutung chrakterisiert. Zudem werden die olfaktorischen Markiersubstanzen hinsichtlich ihrer potentiell signalgebenden Komponenten untersucht und Bioessays zur olfaktorischen Wahrnehmungsleistung von Mausmakis entwickelt.
