Im Vergleich zu anderen Getreidearten ist Roggen sehr reich an "Ballaststoffen", d. h. an Kohlenhydraten, die nicht durch körpereigene Enzyme, sondern nur durch die Darmflora abgebaut werden können (z. B. Arabinoxylane/Fructane). Spezifische, diätetisch erwünschte Wirkungen werden dabei insbesondere dem Fermentationsmuster (besonders butyratreich) zugesprochen. Gerade im Vergleich zu Weizen sollen diesbezügliche Auswirkungen geprüft werden. In-vivo-Untersuchungen dienen der Gewinnung von Chymus vom terminalen Ileum, in dem sowohl die Flora als auch das Fermentationsmuster bestimmt werden. Ileum- und Faeces-Flora wird aber auch als Inokulum für In-vitro-Fermentationsversuche genutzt, um die Produktionsraten spezifischer flüchtiger Fettsäuren quantifizieren zu können.

Project Details:
The number of dead harbor porpoises in the Schleswig-Holstein waters of the North Sea and Baltic Sea increased sharply in 2016. In contrast, there is no evidence that harbor porpoise populations have also increased. Anthropogenic impacts in harbor porpoise habitat in the North and Baltic Seas continue to increase. In order to get an accurate overview of the number of dead harbor porpoises, all animals will be recorded in this project and the basic biological data (age, sex, weight, place of discovery, date of discovery as well as special features will be registered. These data are important as they will be reported to ASCOBANS, ICES, HELCOM and the IWC. Therefore, uniform and verified data sets should be produced.
Mortality rates on harbor porpoises in the North and Baltic Seas will be developed. For this purpose, a spatial intersection of the dead-found numbers with model results from flight counts 2002-2016 will be carried out.
Furthermore, freshly killed harbor porpoises in the North and Baltic Seas will be examined in detail for their health status. Histological, immunocytochemical, virological and microbiological examinations will be performed. From this, health parameters will be developed for the North Sea, which can be used for the marine protection agreement OSPAR and the Marine Protection Framework Directive.
By-catch harbor porpoises are to be handed in directly by the fishermen in order to determine the health status, age and sex composition. In addition to the stranding net, close cooperation with the fishermen, the OIC and other research institutions such as the Thünen Institute for Baltic Sea Fisheries in Rostock is envisaged for the bycatch.

Project Details:
The grey seal populations in the North Sea and Baltic waters of Schleswig-Holstein continued to increase in recent years. The urgency to investigate the health status of these marine mammals is growing with the populations, due to the assumption that grey seals may play a part in the spread of infectious diseases in consequence of their migratory behaviour. This research project aims to investigate the health status and causes of death of grey seals dying in coastal waters of Schleswig-Holstein. The parasitic, viral and bacterial burden, including zoonotic infectious agents, shall be assessed in terms of potential changes. Grey seals found and transported to the ITAW for examination in the investigation period 2020 to 2023 shall be fully necropsied. Histological, parasitological, virological and microbiological investigations will be conducted. Furthermore, these data will be compared with results from previous years in order to assess the health status development. Additionally, the development of habitat utilisation and genetic composition of the grey seal populations shall be investigated and evaluated. In this process, possible changes of haul-out and pupping site use shall be analysed. The gained data will be exchanged with neighbouring countries. The Common Wadden Sea Secretariat (CWSS), the Trilateral Seal Expert Group (TSEG) as well as the HELCOM Seal Health Group for the Baltic Sea and the OSPAR Marine Mammal Expert Group play an important role here.

The aim of the project is to develop practicable risk reduction measures and recommendations for a good professional application of biocidal products of the product types PT 03 and PT 18 in animal houses. The long-term goal of these proposed measures is the establishment of a holistic hygiene management in the barn, which includes cleaning, disinfection and disinfestation as preventive measures and at the same time ensures a high level of safety for the environment as well as animal health.

Seit August 2016 verzichtet die Geflügelwirtschaft, basierend auf der Vereinbarung mit dem Bundesministerium für Ernährung und Landwirtschaft, auf die bisher in der Praxis übliche prophylaktische Behandlung der Schnäbel bei Legehennenküken. Seit Januar 2017 sieht der Erlass in Niedersachsen den finalen Verzicht auf die Schnabelbehandlung vor. Grund dafür ist, dass es sich gemäß Tierschutzgesetz um eine Amputation handelt, die dem Tier Schmerzen und Leiden zufügt, da der Schnabel ein besonders empfindliches Sinnesorgan mit nervalen Einrichtungen bis in seine Spitze ist. Der Verzicht auf die Schnabelkürzung erhöht jedoch generell auf allen Betrieben das Risiko des Auftretens schwerwiegender Folgen von Verhaltensstörungen in Form von Federpicken und Kannibalismus. Zur Erleichterung des Umstiegs auf die Haltung schnabelungekürzter Tiere wurden im Rahmen des Tierschutzplans Niedersachsen "Empfehlungen zur Verhinderung von Federpicken und Kannibalismus bei Jung- und Legehennen" Niedersächsisches Ministerium für Ernährung, Landwirtschaft und Verbraucherschutz, 2017) erarbeitet und den Betrieben zur Verfügung gestellt. Vor diesem Hintergrund soll von 2017 bis 2019 evaluiert werden, inwieweit die erarbeiteten Empfehlungen erfolgversprechend in der Praxis umgesetzt werden können und welche Anpassungen notwendig sind.

Die Ostsee dient als einzigartiges Modell-Ökosystem, in dem Topprädatoren als Frühwarnsystem für den Gesundheitszustand der Ökosysteme genutzt werden können. Im Laufe des letzten Jahrhunderts wurden die Nahrungsnetze der Ostsee durch diverse Schadstoffe, durch Jagd und Fischerei sowie Eutrophierung stark beeinflusst. Der Fokus des BaltHealth Projekts liegt daher auf der Untersuchung von räumlichen und zeitlichen Trends in Multi-Level-Nahrungsnetzen, die durch chemische Substanzen, Klimawandel und Zoonosen hervorgerufen werden sowie der Analyse deren Wechselwirkungen. Das Projekt-Konsortium, das vier Bonusländer repräsentiert, bietet eine einzigartige Synergie von ökologischer, toxikologischer und veterinärmedizinischer Expertise. Das Konsortium hat Zugriff auf modernste Einrichtungen und Techniken, sowie auf über Jahrzehnte erworbene Proben und Daten, die dafür verwendet werden, neue Indikatoren für die Tiergesundheit und den ökologischen Zustand der Ostsee zu entwickeln. Sobald die Interaktionen zwischen den wichtigsten ökologischen und kommerziellen Arten definiert worden sind, werden in separaten Arbeitspaketen der Transfer von Energie und Schadstoffen in den Nahrungsnetzen untersucht. Dabei sollen insbesondere Verbindungen zu pathologischen, immun-und endokrinen Effektbiomarkern sowie wichtige Infektionskrankheiten und Zoonosen untersucht weren. Alle Daten sollen dann in einem Modell zu den gesundheitlichen Auswirkungen der verschiedenen Stressoren auf die Nahrungsnetze der Ostsee zusammengeführt werden. Die Projektergebnisse sollen darüber hinaus neue Erkenntnisse für die Risikobewertung in den Ostseestaaten liefern und die Ergebnisse den relevanten Interessengruppen, einschließlich HELCOM, ICES, OSPAR und ASCOBANS übermittelt werden.

The R2Viral project aims at linking state-of-the-art research advances in the study of host-pathogen interactions, with pre-clinical testing of preventive and therapeutic tools to effectively implement alternative methods to animal experimentation. Successful implementation of reduction and replacement principles calls for evidence-based assessment of alternative approaches. To this end, R2Viral will apply and assess the relevance of technologies developed as part of the NLTB central platform (Niedersachsen Live-Tissue and primary cell Bio-Bank) as alternatives to animal experimentation for the characterization of the pathogenesis of respiratory viral infections and of asthma, and for the efficacy and safety testing of therapeutics. Gained knowledge will be collectively disseminated in peer-reviewed publications and presentations to promote and facilitate the use of the proposed alternative approaches to animal experimentation. As such, it will provide a blueprint for establishing a framework linking cutting-edge research to effective R2 implementation that will impact on other infections or disease-targeted organs in the future.

Recent studies show that TBE is emerging in Central and Western Europe, but the true medical importance is not known. The causative agent, TBE virus, is thought be cycled between the vector tick and the natural rodent host in foci of very limited size. The ecological basis for this is unknown, but recently described variation of TBEV strains with regard to pathogenicity may influence vector-host-virus interaction as well as disease severity. TBE patients and controls will provide information on disease severity and risk factors to the public health authorities. We will identify natural foci and study ecological characteristics and transmission dynamics. We will analyse virological and ecological data to permit better prediction of future TBE emergence and to identify possibilities for altering ecological foci to decrease human TBE risk. Genetic data from vectors and hosts and experimental studies on transmission as well as the pathogenicity of and the immune response to TBEV will provide virological and immunological data essential for the development of more effective vaccines using T-cell correlates of protection. Results of all projects of the consortium will help PHA to develop and implement more effective intervention strategies to reduce TBE burden.
