Technical knowledge

Acquisition and updating of specialist knowledge for veterinarians are regulated in the Radiation Protection Act (StrlSchG) and the Radiation Protection Ordinance (StrlSchV). As a rule, this requires successful participation in recognised courses. The content of the courses is specified in the guideline "Radiation Protection in Veterinary Medicine".

Updating the technical qualification

Recognised courses (§ 74 StrlSchG) for updating specialist knowledge are offered by various institutions. A list of providers can be found on the website of the German Veterinary Medical Association.

The specialist knowledge must be updated at least every five years. The cut-off date is the date of issue of the examination and not the date of the radiology examination.

Acquisition of specialist knowledge in radiation protection for veterinary medicine/students of the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover Foundation.

The way of acquiring the qualification has changed several times in recent years. The various procedures are listed here in chronological order.

Note: Before 31.12.2018, the acquisition of specialist knowledge was regulated in the X-ray Ordinance (RöV), which is no longer valid. Therefore, you will still find the references to the RöV in the following.

Note on different technical qualifications

Depending on the activity, there are different qualifications for veterinarians. The basis for all qualifications is the general qualification, which allows veterinarians to operate X-ray equipment or fluoroscopy equipment. Only this can be acquired during the course of study. In addition, there are four special qualifications for

    Computed tomography
    X-ray therapy on animals
    nuclear medicine diagnostics
Nuclear medical therapy, teletherapy and brachytherapy.

The acquisition of these special qualifications is regulated in the guideline "Radiation Protection in Veterinary Medicine".

Acquisition of specialist knowledge in radiation protection for graduates of other universities

All examinations issued before 01.07.2002 also include the technical qualification according to RöV. From 01.07.2002 onwards, the acquisition of specialist knowledge within the course of study is only possible if this has been approved by the competent ministry or authority. If your examination does not contain a corresponding entry or you have not received a corresponding supplement to your examination certificate, you must enquire at the issuing university whether you have acquired the specialist knowledge within your studies. If you do not have specialist knowledge, you can acquire it according to the guideline "Radiation Protection in Veterinary Medicine" (acquisition course and practical experience). You can find out about the recognised providers of such courses from the Federal Veterinary Chamber or the relevant state veterinary chamber.
