What requirements do I need to apply for a study place?
You will need a suitable Bachelor's degree in subjects such as food technology, beverage technology, food chemistry, biotechnology, veterinary medicine or biology, process engineering or engineering sciences, but also chemical engineering, proof of language proficiency in English (B2), in German (A1), a visa and, depending on your country of origin, an APS certificate for applicants from India, China and Vietnam. Is there a Numerus Clausus (NC)?
No, there is no NC. However, places are allocated in the order of grades, i.e. the better the Bachelor's degree in a suitable Bachelor's subject, the higher the probability of getting a place. When can I apply for the programme?
The application period starts each year at 1st of May and ends at 15th of July. Please inform yourself timely about the necessary admission documentation to get accepted for the program. The Master's Commission only decides on the admission and suitability of the degrees after this, so there is no information on this beforehand. The study programme starts in winter semester each year.
How many places are available each year?
There are 25 places available.
What documents must be submitted with the application?
The following documents are required to be uploaded when applying via our portal:
- Curriculum vitae (CV)
- Proof of the highest school-leaving qualification
- Bachelor's degree certificate (if this is not yet available, a certificate of the achievements, the credit points (at least 150) and the average grade
- Transcript of Records
- List and content description of the (teaching) courses (module catalogue)
- German A1 - proof of a successful participation
- English B2 - proof of a successful participation
- APS certificate for applicants from India, Vietnam and China (certificate from the Academic Evaluation Centre APS)
Please note that applicants who do not submit the required documents in full and on time will be excluded from the admission procedure. Which bachelor's degrees are accepted?
The M.Sc. Food Process and Product Engineering (M.Sc. FPPE) programme is aimed at graduates with a Bachelor's degree in subjects such as food technology, beverage technology, food chemistry, biotechnology, veterinary medicine or biology, process engineering or engineering sciences, but also chemical engineering.
Can I submit my bachelor´s certificate later?
If the final bachelor’s degree certificate is not yet available, it can be submitted later (latest by end of the first semester). In that case, students must submit for application a certificate of the achievements (transcript of records), the credit points (at least 150) and the average grade.
Which language certificates do I need?
For German language skills level A1 and for English language skills level B2
Can I submit the language certificate for German later or do it in Germany?
You need to submit the language certificate with your application via our application portal. If you do not submit the certificate, your application will be excluded from the application process.
Can I submit my language certification later?
No, it is not possible to submit language certifications (English and German) later. Language certifications must be submitted in the application process.
I am unsure whether my application is complete. Where can I see whether I have submitted all the documents?
You can only submit your application with all documents. The system will not allow you to submit your application without uploading all the necessary documents.
I have concerns whether I will get my visa in time. How long does it take to be accepted?
Admission processing times vary, but decisions are typically made within a few weeks after the application deadline. Visa processing can take several months. It is best to contact the German embassy early on if you want to study in Germany. Sometimes processing procedures can already be set up and only the visa needs to be issued after successful admission. This can then work more quickly.
When will I find out if I have been offered a place?
The Master's Commission meets after the end of the application period. Towards the end of July, the list of candidates is finalized, and you will be informed if you have been admitted. You then have to confirm your place If you do not accept the place, the next suitable person will be admitted and your entitlement will lapse. Depending on the acceptance of places, places will be allocated again and again until the start of the course.
How soon do I have to confirm that I accept the place?
Once you have been admitted, you have to accept the place. The timeline you will find on your letter of admission. If you do not respond or cancel, the place will be reallocated. Is there a registration fee? What does the programme cost?
Students must pay a semester fee, which covers administrative costs and “Deutschlandticket” (public transportation). This tuition fee is due every semester. When does the programme start, how long does it take and when do I have to be in Germany?
The programme FPPE starts in the winter semester (October) each year, starting with two weeks of orientation. The study programme must be started on time, a later start is not possible. The standard period of studies for the programme FPPE is 4 semesters (two years).
What language is the program offered in?
The programme is taught in English.
Are scholarships offered for the programme?
Scholarships may be available through external funding sources, the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) https://www.daad.de/en/,

Students should research and apply for scholarships independently.
Is FPPE an online master’s programme?
No, this is an in-person programme, requiring physical attendance. The Master involves several practical courses, workshops, tutoring and company visits which are mandatory events. It is important to be in Germany from the start of your studies.
In which city will the studies take place?
The programme takes place at the Artland Campus in Quakenbrück – a branch site of the TiHo Hannover. It is also possible that individual events may take place at the TiHo in Hannover. However, the larger part of the program will be in Quakenbrück – please keep that in mind when looking for accommodation.
Is it possible to attend the programme online from another country?
No, the programme is in-person, and students are expected to attend classes on-site in Quakenbrück. Some courses may offer online components, but full remote participation is not possible. Please make sure that you are already on site at the start of your studies.
Where can I find accommodation?
Students can look for private housing through online platforms, like www.kleinanzeigen.de, www.immoscout.de, www.immowelt.de or www.immonet.de or local platforms: www.baugenossenschaft-lkos.de, https://immobilien.noz.de/ or https://stephanswerk.de/immobilien/?vermarktungsart=miete. Moreover, besides Quakenbrück students can also look for accommodation in the surrounding cities along the railway (e.g. Osnabrück, Oldenburg, Cloppenburg etc.). Is there the possibility to do my doctorate thesis or PhD afterwards?
Yes, graduates of the programme may pursue a PhD in related fields, either at TiHo Hannover or other universities
What are the benefits of this programme?
The FPPE programme provides a strong foundation in food process engineering and product development, offers international career opportunities, and connects students with industry and research networks. During your studies you may have the opportunity to do a student’s job at the Artland Campus or the surrounding companies.
Can I find out what the admission status is?
This is generally not possible during the current application phase. You do not need to contact anyone, as no assessment can be made until the Master's Commission has reviewed all applications and decided on admission. If you receive a letter of admission/rejection or exclusion, your status in the application portal will change. You can check the status of your application here at any time.
