Pharmacology is the study of the interplay between drugs and living organisms. The knowledge of pharmacology forms the basis for the application of pharmacological therapies in veterinary medicine.
The duties of the department comprise the teaching of general and special pharmacology as well as clinical pharmacology and the German drug act for students of veterinary medicine. The department hosts lectures and classes in pharmacology and toxicology as well as in neurobiology for students of biology (Bachelor, Master). Furthermore, lectures, seminaries, colloquia and classes for the Ph.D. programs of the TiHo are offered.
The department's research adresses pharmacological questions mainly on the pathology and pharmacology of diseases of the central nervous system, immunopharmacology (allergic inflammation), transdermal drug resorption as well as toxicological questions such as studies on adverse effects of magnetic fields.
The department offers advisory services to veterinarians regarding pharmacological, toxicological and drug legislation issues by writing. Furthermore, expert opinions for lawsuits can be prepared.
The department is equipped with modern laboratory apparatus for pharmacology, toxicology, electrophysiology, histopathology, biochemistry, molecular biology and chemical analyses for academical and contract research.
