Gisa Gerold is Keynote Speaker at the GSEV Autumn Meeting in Hamburg
The German Society for Extracellular Vesicles (GSEV) Autumn Meeting will take place from October 1 to 2, 2024 in Hamburg. Prof. Gisa Gerold will give a keynote lecture in the session on "Extracellular vesicles in immunity & infection".

The Gerold lab is moving!
Works outing AG Gerold

On July 11, 2024, this year's works outing of AG Gerold took place at BOWHUNTER World in Laatzen. 12 members of the AG went on a foam animal hunt in teams of four with bows and arrows. This outing provided a valuable opportunity to strengthen team spirit and promote cohesion within the working group. The day ended with a great lunch at the Teichhûs restaurant, which was joined by another team member to round off this great excursion.

Summer party 2024

On 24.06.2024 the Institute of Biochemistry celebrates its summer party at the Teehäuschen starting at 4 pm. In addition to a joint barbecue with a bring-and-share buffet, we will also bid a fitting farewell to Dr. Imke Steffen. She will be taking up a new position as a junior professor in Colorado, USA, in August 2024.
We look forward to seeing you there and to many interesting conversations.
Retreat 2024

This year's retreat of the Institute of Biochemistry will take place on 25.06.2024. In addition to inspiring lectures by the individual working groups on their scientific projects, two renowned guest speakers from the MHH will also present their research this year. Prof. Guntram Graßl from the Institute of Medical Microbiology and Hospital Hygiene will give a lecture on "Gut friends and foes: intestinal infections and how to fight them". Prof. Daniel Depledge from the Institute of Virology will present on the topic "Gotta get up, gotta get out: Toward a mechanistic understanding of VZV reactivation from latency in sensory neurons".
Employees and guests can also look forward to a refreshing ice cream break.
We look forward to numerous participants and lively discussions.
ZIM day 2024
Laura B. Talarico as guest speaker at the Seminar on Infection Biology (IBS)
On June 10th,2024, Laura B. Talarico gave a guest lecture as part of the Seminar on Infection Biology (IBS) on the topic “Complement protein C1q modulation of antibody dependent enhancement of dengue virus infection in human myeloid cell lines is dependent on cell type and antibody specificity. Many thanks for the interesting lecture and the lively discussion afterwards!

Keystone Symposia: HIV and (Re)Emerging Viruses: Aligning Lessons Across Pandemics, Hannover

From April 09 to 11, 2024 the Keystone Symposium: HIV and (Re)Emerging Viruses: Aligning Lessons Across Pandemics will take place in Herrenhausen, Hannover.
Dr. Miriam Becker and Dr. Lisa Lasswitz from AG Gerold will participate in the symposium with poster contributions. Dr. Lisa Lasswitz will also give a talk on the topic: "CD81 is a host factor for chikungunya virus replication"

New addition to the Gerold Group - Daniel Jiménez Soto
We are pleased to welcome Daniel Jiménez Soto to the AG on 15.02.2024.
Daniel Jiménez Soto will complete an internship in the period from 15.02.2024 - 30.04.2024 in our group. He is taking part in the DAAD's ISAP exchange program, which supports exchange between the TiHo and the partner university in Costa Rica. Daniel is supervised by Dr. Lasswitz and is working with her on the project "Characterization of CD81 Interaction Partners with a Role in Alphavirus Replication".

New addition to the Gerold Group - Charushila Paul

We are pleased to welcome Charushila Paul to our group from 15.01.2024 until July 2024. Charushila is currently completing the IDOH program and will work on the topic "Evaluation of Host Factors in Alphavirus Infection" as part of this program. We wish her every success!
IDOH (Infectious Diseases and One Health) is a partnership of some of Europe's leading research-intensive universities in the field of infectious diseases and the "One Health" concept. The three founding partners are the Université de Tours, the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, and the Hannover Medical School.

Engaging discussions at our GfV workshop on new and re-emerging zoonotic viruses

Friedemann Weber, Seema Laldawala, Martin Beer and Alison Groseth gave engaging keynotes and all participants contributed with top notch short talks. Thanks to all participants for three days of exciting scientific exchange.
The prize for the best short talk was awarded to Peter Reuther from Freiburg. Congratulations Peter!

Gisa gerold was keynote speaker at the Viral NRW Retreat
Institute excursion

On August 01, 2023, the institute excursion of the AG Gerold took place. This excursion served to bring the working group together after taking over the management of the Institute of Biochemistry. Nine members of the AG paddled in teams of 3 over the river Leine and Ihme. At the end of the day, we had a snack at the L'Osteria, which was joined by other members of the working group to finish the great excursion.
Thank you very much for this beautiful day. We are looking forward to a successful, further cooperation.

Conference of the Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology e.V.
From 05.09.2023 to 06.09.2023 the conference of the Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology e.V. will take place in Frankfurt am Main, Germany.
This conference will focus on different areas of proteomics. Thus, an overview of proteomics methods shall be created in order to contribute to new scientific knowledge.

Second One Health Workshop of the Society of Virology
Second One Health Workshop of the Society of Virology
We are pleased to announce that another workshop of the Society of Virology (GfV) will take place. The topic will be "New and recurrent zoonotic diseases". The workshop will be held from 06/09/2023 to 08/09/2023 at the conference center Kloster Wöltingerode in Goslar, Germany.
At the workshop, students and postdocs will be brought together with experts in the field of "one health" to promote and support scientific interdisciplinary exchange. In particular, we encourage infection biologists, cell biologists, veterinarians, and medical doctors to share their work on zoonotic infections. The interdisciplinary nature of the workshop aims to stimulate new collaborations in One Health and viral zoonotic research.
Four keynote speakers will present the latest developments in the field. Seema S. Lakdawala (University of Pittsburgh, USA), Martin Beer (Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut Riems, Germany), Friedemann Weber (Justus Liebig University Giessen, Germany) and Allison Groseth (Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut Riems, Germany) will share their unique experiences and visions.
All participants will have the opportunity to present their work in the form of a full presentation or elevator pitch. Prizes will be awarded for the best oral presentation and the best elevator pitch. We will encourage a lively atmosphere with open discussions. We look forward to seeing old faces and meeting new colleagues who share our enthusiasm for viruses and zoonotic diseases.

Dr. Nele Villabruna
We are pleased to welcome Dr. Nele Villabruna to our working group as of 02.05.2023.
Nele Villabruna completed her Bachelor of Biology in Basel, Switzerland in 2013 and subsequently her Master at the University of Plymouth, UK, with a focus on "Research in Applied Marine Biology".
In 2022, Nele Villabruna successfully completed her PhD with the topic "Emergence and spread of human norovirus in humans and animals" in the Department of Virology at Erasmus University in Rotterdam.
In the Gerold group she will be able to excellently contribute her expertise and work on the project "Development of an ex-vivo model to study zoonotic transmission of noroviruses".

The 32nd Annual Meeting of the Society of Virology March 2023
The 32nd annual meeting of the Society of Virology (GfV) will be held in Ulm, Germany, March 28-31, 2023. For the first time since the onset of the Corona Pandemic the meeting will be held in presence.
At this meeting, the latest findings in virology will be presented by national as well as international experts in plenary sessions and workshops. Also the recently founded "young GfV" will organize a workshop and present new activities of these young scientists.
