Diversity statement Prof. Gerold

Statement on Inclusive Excellence from Prof. Dr. Gerold

Humanity is facing major challenges, including the emergence of new viruses and the associated diseases. With our work, we want to help minimize the negative effects of the emergence of new viruses.

Another problem in many countries, including Germany, is the discrimination of people based on their race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, nationality, etc. We therefore strive to be an inclusive and diverse laboratory.

We recognize that many different people can be passionate about science, are willing to work hard, and are tolerant of the daily hardships we endure as scientists. We accept people into our group because they are passionate, intelligent, hardworking and talented.

As a group, we will promote diversity in science and advocate for justice and equality. We are not perfect and will make mistakes as we learn and grow.

Because words are easy, here are some of the actions we will take together to become more anti-racist.

  • We will include discussions about racism, diversity and inclusion in our lab meetings at least four times a year to normalize discussions about this difficult topic.
  • We will be leaders in our department by including discussions about racism, diversity and inclusion in our weekly department meetings to normalize discussion and encourage open dialogue.
  • We participate in the "Diversity Charter", which is a voluntary commitment by signatory organizations to promote diversity and appreciation in the work environment.
  • We support the participation of students and colleagues in the courses and programs of the TiHo Diversity Office.
  • We will make the voices of underrepresented groups in our scientific community more heard by sharing their work and including them on committees by serving on program and planning committees for societies, conferences, and journals.
