Funding Opportunities for Internships Abroad
Erasmus
Erasmus Internship
Students at TiHo can apply for Erasmus+ funding for an internship abroad through the International Academic Office. The program supports study-related stays at universities and companies in one of the 26 EU member states, their overseas territories, the EEA countries Iceland, Norway, and Liechtenstein, as well as the accession countries Turkey and North Macedonia, provided the internship lasts at least 60 days. The internship can also take place within the first 12 months after graduation.
Unable to go abroad for 60 days?
That doesn’t mean you have to miss out on an Erasmus experience! Plan your stay in a blended format, combining a short physical mobility phase abroad (5–30 days) with a virtual component.
Application Deadline:
Applications for Erasmus+ funding must be submitted at least two months before the internship begins!
Erasmus International:
In the 2025/26 academic year, internships outside Erasmus+ program countries can also be funded again. Applications for Erasmus+ funding for internships outside Europe, taking place between October 2025 and September 2026, must be submitted by September 30, 2025.
For further information, please contact Christine Winter.
Here you can find details about the Erasmus internship process.

ISAP-BIO Exchange with the Partner University in Costa Rica
The Stiftung Tierärztliche Hochschule Hannover (TiHo) and the Universidad Nacional (UNA) in Heredia, Costa Rica, have signed a partnership agreement.
As part of this agreement, students and lecturers from the fields of biology and veterinary medicine will be exchanged between the two universities. This means that students will spend several months at the partner university, taking courses and internships, while lecturers will offer courses at the partner university.
DAAD International Study and Training Partnerships Program (ISAP)
The ISAP-BIO Program offers 3 scholarships annually for German bachelor’s students in biology from Leibniz University Hannover and for students in the Master’s program "Animal Biology and Biomedical Sciences" at TiHo. In exceptional cases, students from other German universities can also participate in the exchange. The focus of the exchange is on tropical biology and its various aspects.
The exchange is funded through the ISAP program (International Study and Training Partnerships) of the DAAD, which promotes long-term cooperation between foreign and German universities.
Studying in Costa Rica
The partner university Universidad Nacional (UNA) is a public university established in 1973. The main campus is located in the city of Heredia, about 10 km from the capital, San José. Over 12,000 students study in various faculties at UNA. The biology program is mainly offered at the Escuela de Ciencias Biológicas and is known for its strong focus on ecological fields.
The academic calendar at UNA differs from that of German universities. For German biology students, the stay usually lasts from August 1 to March 31 of the following year. For exact dates, refer to the UNA academic calendar available on their website (https://documentos.una.ac.cr/handle/unadocs/12925).
The language of instruction in the courses is Spanish. The study system is more school-like than in Germany. Most courses are accompanied by homework, regular small tests, and field trips. Many courses also involve scientific short projects.
Preferred Course Areas During the Exchange:
-
Ecology and Conservation
-
Population Ecology
-
Behavioral Biology
-
Biogeography of Vertebrates in Costa Rica
-
Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
-
Tropical Herpetology
Additionally, a research project (Research Weeks) should be completed. Specific courses and their schedules can be found on UNA’s website: www.una.ac.cr/estudiantes/ or www.biologia.una.ac.cr.
Study Requirements for German Students:
For Bachelor Students:
-
2-3 courses related to tropical ecology totaling at least 6-12 credits in the August-December semester; minimum grade: 8.0
-
Tropical biology internship: “Practica Profesional Supervisada” for 4 credits, including the writing of a report in the format of a scientific publication, which will serve as proof of participation.
For Master Students:
-
2-3 courses totaling at least 6-10 credits, minimum grade: 8.0, and 1 more extended research internship
-
Alternatively, 2 research internships and 1 additional (tropical biology) course
-
The research internships must meet the TiHo requirements and will be credited at TiHo as 15 ECTS-CP points (Research Weeks, Module 3108). The minimum duration per internship is 7 weeks, including the writing of a report in the format of a scientific publication.
Recognition of Study Performance:
Proof of performance: Official transcript from UNA, confirmation from lecturers, and internship reports.
Overall, students in the ISAP program must earn at least 25 ECTS-CP (approximately 16-17 credits at UNA) if they are funded for 8 months (August to March). Generally, 1 credit (UNA) ≈ 1.5 ECTS points.
Scholarship Benefits
Full DAAD scholarship (ISAP Program), including a travel allowance, insurance subsidy, and a one-time mobility allowance of €1,725 for 3 students per year.
Application Procedure and Selection Criteria
Applications must be submitted by January 31 for participation in the same year (starting in August).
