Project description

Over the last several years the awareness for marine mammals has been growing. On one hand, this was caused by a decrease in the population sizes in several areas. On the other hand, increasing pressures from anthropogenic activities, such as seismic and military activities, offshore windmills, gravel and sand extraction as well as ship traffic, in the marine ecosystems made it clear that an internationally recognised management needs to be established.
Reliable projections of the occurrence of species in the areas are an indispensible prerequisite for reducing conflict. To this end, a database will be developed which combines existing databases on post-mortem findings, incidental and planned sightings. The integration with biotic and abiotic factors as well as other databases will facilitate projections for areas with lower data collection levels. Initial steps will be taken to determine values for other habitats.
