Neuroscience Workshop 2026
Six roads to a PhD and a hands-on experience that brings you closer to your brain!
On May 5, doctoral students from the Systems Neuroscience PhD program visited the Wilhelm Raabe School in Hanover to speak with high school students about career paths and research in neuroscience.
The day began with students sharing how they came to pursue their PhDs in neuroscience at the University of Veterinary Medicine. They presented different degree programs, ranging from biology to veterinary medicine and sports psychology, as well as different career paths. Particular emphasis was placed on the fact that career paths do not have to follow a straight line, and that students should prioritize their interests and well-being when choosing a career. The 12th-grade students were impressed by the range of possibilities to reach career goals.
Additionally, an interactive workshop on neuroscience was held for the advanced biology class and other interested students. At four stations, the basics of the brain, our senses, and the nervous system were taught in a fun and engaging way. For example, the students were able to control a robotic claw that, like a neuroprosthesis, uses electrical signals from their muscles to open or close. They were also able to examine prepared brain slices under a microscope and experience how easily the human brain can be tricked. This allowed students to gain many practical insights into the topic and connect them with theoretical concepts regarding neurons, nervous systems, and the different brain areas.
