EU Horizon Europe project aWISH („Animal Welfare Indicators at the Slaughterhouse”) (Kemper)

Automated monitoring of animal welfare indicators at the slaughterhouse to improve the welfare of fattening pigs and broilers

The project “aWISH” aims to improve animal welfare of pigs and broilers Europe-wide through automated measuring and evaluation of animal-based welfare indicators at the slaughterhouse. Via a data platform all involved stakeholders (farmers, catching teams, transporters, slaughterhouses) receive feedback as well as recommendations on welfare improvements (“Best Practices”).

24 partners from 11 European countries including six pilot slaughterhouses in France, Spain, Serbia, Austria, Poland and the Netherlands are engaged in aWISH. As part of the project, 15 sensor based systems are being installed and developed, a catalogue with about 70 animal welfare indicators is compiled and nine Best Practice Guides are being published. Furthermore, an evaluation of the socio-economic and environmental impact as well as of the animal welfare status in regard to national strategies is carried out.
