In January 2009, the Virtual Center for Alternative and Complementary Methods to Animal Experiments (VZET) was established at the TiHo.

It is a central goal of the University development plan to develop alternative and supplementary methods to animal experiments and to use them in research and teaching. According to the 3Rs concept founded by W.M.S. Russell and R.L. Burch in 1959, these are test methods that either allow the complete avoidance of the use of animals (replacement) or - if this is not possible - a reduction in the number of animals used (reduction) or a reduction in the degree of stress on the animals (refinement).

The Virtual Center for Replacement and Complementary Methods to Animal Experiments promotes interdisciplinary cooperation and the bundling of activities of the various institutes in the above-mentioned field of work, both in research and in teaching.
