In Schleswig-Holstein hunters have observed an increase of sick and dead European Hares for a considerable time. During this project the infection status and occurrence of sick European hares shall be assessed and three study areas selected in cooperation with the Wildlife Cadastre Schleswig-Holstein (INR-CAU). In every study area carcasses shall be acquired and extensively necropsied with the local hunter (LJV Schleswig-Holstein). Continuative histological, virological, parasitological and microbiological investigations shall be conducted. The occurrence of tularemia as well as RHD and EBHS virus infections shall be examined in cooperation with corresponding institutes of the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover, Foundation. The results will be evaluated concertedly with the National Hunting Association Schleswig-Holstein and the INR-CAU and further investigation strategies respectively preventive measures will be developed. This project shall be utilised for a further development of preventive health protection measures and food safety of wildlife in Schleswig-Holstein.
