Menschen in Talar werfen ihre Hüte in die Höhe

In 1999, the Hans Hellmann Memorial Award was presented for the first time for the best dissertation on a basic research-oriented topic. The prize is sponsored by the Gesellschaft für Innovative Veterinärdiagnostik (IVD) mbH.

The Founder
The award is named after a teacher at the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover: Dr. Ing. Hans Hellmann was a physics lecturer at the TiHo from 1931 to 1934. His scientific work in the basic subject of quantum chemistry was of an excellent level. Since his wife was of Jewish origin, he had to leave the TiHo during the rule of the National Socialists. In 1938 he was executed in the Soviet Union on suspicion of espionage.

The Award
The award is presented on the occasion of the doctoral ceremony in the summer semester and is endowed with 1,000 euros. Basic experimental work is eligible for the award; literature work is not eligible for the award. In the doctoral procedure, the written and oral performance must have received the rating "very good". Results from the work must have been accepted for publication by a peer-reviewed international journal.

Habilitated members of the TiHo faculty are entitled to propose candidates. Proposals are to be submitted to the president. The dissertation and the publication must be submitted in triplicate. Please note that the dissertation must not have been submitted earlier than the summer doctorate of the previous year. Theses for which another award has already been made or for which another award is to be made at the same time are excluded. Also, the author must not have received full payment from a plan or research position.
