In this project the findings regarding grey seal predation, which were obtained in an earlier pilot study, shall be applied and extended. Retrospective studies indicate that predation occurs for a longer time and on a larger scale than previously known. However, an uncertainty exists about several aspects, especially the range of this behaviour and the associated impact on marine mammal populations and their ecosystem. Against the background of these findings and the constantly increasing number of grey seals the ecological backgrounds, frequency and potential causes as well as consequences of this behaviour shall be assessed in this study.

Standardised and reproducible methods are required in order to conduct a scientifically verified evaluation and quantification. Therefore, methods for the evaluation of carcasses shall be established in this secondary project to analyse the cause of death of stranded marine mammals and to prevent misinterpretations in the future.

Since when does this predation behaviour occur against other marine mammals?

If it is a recent behaviour, it is to be determined if and which alterations in the ecosystem caused this phenomenon.

Are the concerned grey seals individual animals?

In order to deviate the behaviour´s ecological relevance for the ecosystem, it shall be investigated if it is an anomaly of individual seals or if it is a prevalent and common behaviour.

Which age group and sex can these grey seals be allocated?

Existing data shall be analysed if it is a sex- or age-specific behaviour potentially. They shall assist to clarify the behaviour´s possible ethological origin.

Are there regional and seasonal foci of these incidents?

The spatial dimension of this behaviour shall be investigated as well as whether there are sensitive periods when this behaviour can be observed potentially. Hence conclusions on possible impacts on other marine mammal populations can be derived.

Which behaviour do predating grey seals exhibit?

This aspect is important for the evaluation of carcasses in order to better judge and assess lesion patterns.

Which diagnostic tools are available?

Histopathological analytical methods shall be tested and standardised to reliably estimate the carcasses´ cause of death.

How can grey seal predations be distinguished from other kills, for example by terrestrial predators?

For this purpose cost-efficient genetic techniques shall be established, which can be utilised to detect grey seal predation in general.

The findings gained in the framework of this project shall facilitate a management of marine mammals in German waters and beyond, based on substantiated knowledge.

Erkrankungen der Nasennebenhöhlen treten bei Pferden relativ selten auf. Sie können meist erst im subakuten bis chronischen Krankheitsstadium diagnostiziert werden, da das Leitsymptom des einseitigen Nasenausflusses aufgrund der komplexen anatomischen Struktur der equinen Nasennebenhöhlen in der Regel erst bei fortschreitender Erkrankungsdauer auftritt.
Eine gesicherte Diagnose kann meist erst nach umfangreicher bildgebender Diagnostik durch ein Zusammenspiel von Endoskopie, Röntgen und Computertomographie gestellt werden. In einigen Fällen ist zusätzlich eine invasive sinuskopische Untersuchung notwendig, um Proben zu entnehmen.
Bei Krankheiten der tiefen Atemwege liefert neben der endoskopischen Untersuchung vor allem die zytologische Auswertung des Tracheobronchialsekrets wichtige Aussagen über Art und Schwere der Erkrankung und dient darüber hinaus zur prognostischen Einschätzung.
Vor diesem Hintergrund werden im Rahmen der eigenen Untersuchungen transnasal endoskopisch Sekretproben aus dem Drainagewinkel der Apertura nasomaxillaris von gesunden Pferden und Pferden, die Hinweise auf das Vorliegen einer Sinusitis zeigen, entnommen, um diese zytologisch und bakteriologisch zu untersuchen.
Das Ziel dieser Untersuchungen ist es, herauszufinden, ob eine Korrelation zwischen dem zytologischen und mikrobiologischen Befund des Sekretes der Nasennebenhöhlen und der mit Hilfe weiterführender bildgebender Verfahren abschließend gestellten Diagnose besteht. Im Weiteren wird der Frage nachgegangen, ob und welchen diagnostischen und prognostischen Nutzen diese Untersuchungsergebnisse bei der Evaluation von Patienten mit Erkrankungen der Nasennebenhöhlen haben.

Fleisch und Fleischerzeugnisse sind in Europa ein wichtiger Bestandteil der Ernährung. Bei den Fleischerzeugnissen gibt es eine große Vielfalt an Produkten insbesondere bei Wurstwaren, mit Brühwurst als dem beliebtesten Vertreter dieser Kategorie. Neben dem klassischen Bezug loser Ware in Metzgereien, sind heute verpackte Produkte im SB-Bereich von Supermärkten üblich. Bei dieser Vermarktungsform werden möglichst lange Haltbarkeitsfristen angestrebt. Um den mikrobiologischen Verderb zu minimieren werden verschiedene Hürden genutzt, neben den produkteigenen, wie Pökeln, Erhitzen oder Räuchern, auch über die Verpackungstechnologie. Der Einsatz einer biologischen Konservierung durch eine gezielte Bakterienflora kann hier synergistisch genutzt werden. Im Rahmen des Projektes wird die Wirkung antibakteriell wirkender Substanzen aus der Flora von Fleischerzeugnissen auf die haltbarkeitsverlängernde Wirkung in verpackter Brühwurst getestet. Die Produkte werden unter handelsüblichen Bedingungen verpackt (Schutzatmosphäre und Vakuum).

Mittels vegetationskundlicher sowie entomologischer Untersuchungen sollen oben genannte Wechselbeziehungen näher charakterisiert werden, und zwar im Rahmen "unkonventioneller Öffentlichketsarbeit"", die auf eine entsprechende Wahrnehmung in der städtischen Bevölkerung zielt (""awareness""). "

The Doggerbank, the largest sandbank of the central North Sea, is an important habitat of the minke whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata), which is the most frequently occurring baleen whale species in the entire North Sea. There is a high biological level of production due to the relatively shallow sea in the Doggerbank area combined with a special circulation. This results in rich but agglomerated food resources for apex predators like seabirds and marine mammals owing to good growing conditions for fish populations.

Minke whales are endangered because of several anthropogenic impacts like fishery activities or offshore construction of wind farms due to their biology and occurrence in the North Sea and adjacent waters. Miscellaneous visual surveys on a national as well as international level were conducted in the Doggerbank marine area in the last few years. The collected data are archived in different data bases and have not been merged and analysed yet.

These archived data shall be evaluated during this project in cooperation with Danish, Dutch and British colleagues. Additionally, an acoustic monitoring for the identification of minke whales is to be established. These studies are important steps in order to understand the minke whales´ habitat utilisation in the Doggerbank area more accurately as well as to better protect this species.

Results:

Effort-related survey data of eight different European institutes working on marine mammals were collected and merged into a common database. In total, 794 sighting records of minke whales from marine mammal and seabird surveys were collected and joined in one database. These data submit a description of the spatio-temporal distribution patterns of minke whales in the North Sea.

In spring, minke whales of the north-eastern Atlantic population enter the North Sea from the north. The numbers increase in the course of the summer and decrease within autumn to a minimum of sightings in winter. The Prey species, like sandeels, are a conceivable trigger. A patchy distribution of sandeels or other prey species in the spawning period and at their foraging grounds result in a cluster of marine top predators at known hot spots. The results of this thesis present more than 50% of all sightings within a radius of 20 km of known sandeel foraging grounds.

This report, in particular, shows that minke whales were recorded at the edges and the slopes of the Dogger Bank, where abundant prey species are common. A minor part of individuals is assumed to remain on the shelf in autumn and winter. Despite a small number of sighting records, were noted in the cold seasons around the North Sea.

The numbers of minke whale sightings and strandings increased in recent years, especially in the southern part. This rise may be the result of a growing population, inter- and intraspecific relations, an increase in monitoring effort or a change in distribution patterns.

Due to increasing minke whale sightings around the Dogger Bank a sound recorder was deployed to detect the animals acoustically. The recordings did not show any detection of minke whale calls. However, airgun sounds used for seismic surveys were recorded which can be a reason that the animals were absent.

The results of this report should be considered for species conservation and management as well as for marine spatial planning in the North Sea

Als Modell zur Untersuchung hepatischer Stoffwechselvorgänge beim ruminierenden Tier haben Ehrhardt et al. (2016) und Witte et al. (in preparation) in Vorarbeiten primäre bovine Hepatozyten aus Leber isoliert und kultiviert. Allerdings weiss man, dass Mono-Kulturen primärer Hepatozyten innerhalb weniger Tage einen Funktionsverlust erfahren können. In Ko-Kulturen mit Makrophagen konnte dagegen ein hepatoprotektive Effekt nachgewiesen werden. Daher ist Ziel des Projektes zu untersuchen, ob die Ko-Kultur primärer boviner Hepatozyten mit Makrophagen die vor allem endokrine Hepatozytenfunktion mit Blick auf den Wachstumshormonrezeptor positiv beeinflusst.
