PhD student position in Hannover

Applications are invited for a PhD student position on the topic of interaction of the insect immune system with the nervous system and behavior.

The PhD project will be part of a joint research project of the labs of Dr. Michael Stern and Prof. Stefanie Becker, The role of ANTi-RVFV Immunity in GermliNe infection and bEhavior modulation in insects (ANTIGoNE)”, both at the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover

The project deals with the question whether infection of a vector (mosquito) with a pathogenic arbovirus can lead to changes in nervous system and behavior, ultimately leading to a higher frequency of blood feeding by infected mosquitos. Most of the work will be carried out in Drosophila as a model, but also on Aedes aegypti. Awide variety of methods will be applied, including immunofluorescence and histochemical techniques, biochemical assays, Western Blot, electrophysiology (electroantennography), and quantitative behavior analysis. The applicant will be working in close cooperation with a second PhD student working on the virology part of the project in the lab of Prof. Becker.

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a Master degree in Biology or equivalent, a background in neuroscience and/or Drosophila, and very good English language skills. Additional experience in immunofluorescence and imaging techniques, electrophysiology, or behavior experiments will be considered as assets. The position is available from Nov 1st, 2019 with funding from the DFG for 3 years.
