Project: Intestinal parasite communities in an endangered primate endemic to Borneo, the proboscis monkey, Nasalis larvatus (Wurmb 1787)

Zoonotic diseases play a major role in medical research and for the conservation biology of threatened species in the tropics. The proboscis monkey (Nasalis larvatus) is a highly endangered folivorous primate, which forms harem (one-male) and bachelor (all-male) groups in lowland tropical rainforests of Borneo. The colobine acts as a primate flagship species for conservation in Malaysia. Anthropogenic habitat loss and fragmentation are its most important threats, notably along the river Kinabatangan in Sabah. A better knowledge of the behavior and health status of proboscis monkeys may improve their conservation and the management of local populations. The aim of this study is therefore a non-invasive assessment of the intestinal parasite fauna and the analysis of important determinants of parasite load in wild and semi-wild proboscis monkey groups. We investigate and compare those aspects in harem and bachelor groups of the Lower Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary as well as from the Labuk Bay Sanctuary in Sabah to assess intestinal parasite communities and to link them to social grouping patterns, host density, temporal variations, and habitats to gain first insight into their significance for zoonotic diseases and the design of effective management strategies.
