The prize donated by Bayer AG should be awarded to the author of an outstanding PhD thesis which was prepared within a PhD program at the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover Foundation and led to a successful conclusion of the PhD program. The author must be registered in a PhD program at the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover Foundation.
The prize is named after Professor Dr. med. Gerhard Domagk, 1895 to 1964, who, as head of the department for experimental pathology and bacteriology of the I.G. Farbenindustrie, Elberfeld (today Bayer AG), discovered the antibacterial effect of Prontosil within a systematic research program of new synthesized azo dyes in 1932 and thus initiated the development of antibacterial chemotherapy. Domagk was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1939 for this discovery and the development of the sulfonamides resulting from this. In the following years, Domagk stood not only for human medicine development of sulfonamides but also for the examination and introduction of this active ingredient group for the treatment of bacterial infections in veterinary medicine and initiated a number of research partnerships with the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover.
