Welcome!
We are pleased to welcome you to TiHo.
The library offers a comprehensive collection of resources in veterinary medicine and related disciplines. These include textbooks, academic monographs, journals, theses and dissertations, as well as other scholarly publications. In addition, a wide range of electronic resources is available.
The information below provides an overview of our services and resources and introduces key aspects of library use.
Information for First-Year Students
The library as a learning space
In the reading room on the upper floor, we provide individual study workstations, both with and without computers. As a student, you can log in to the computers using your IDM credentials or work on your own devices. In addition, three group study rooms are available for collaborative work and may be used without prior reservation.
You also have access to free Wi-Fi (eduroam) and plenty of power outlets for charging your devices. Furthermore, a multifunction device allows you to copy, scan, and print free of charge using your TiHo card.
Lockers
Before entering the reading room, please place your bag(s) in the lockers provided in the entrance hall: You will need a € 1 coin to use them. Baskets are available for taking your belongings into the reading room.
Textbook collection
The textbook collection is freely accessible in the reading room on the first floor. There you’ll find multiple copies of all the textbooks relevant to your studies. The books are organized by subject area and semester, making it easy to locate what you need. Each title is assigned a call number composed of two letters indicating the subject (e.g., Ca for anatomy) followed by a numerical sequence. To assist with navigation, each shelf is marked with a yellow label on its front edges. The majority of the copies are available for you to borrow (yellow tape), in addition, reference copies (red tape) can only be used in the library.
Further details and a complete overview are available on our website under the tab Textbook collection.
Search tool(s)
The entire library collection can be found in our library catalogue. Here you can also find information on location and availability of the media. Alternatively, you can also use our discovery system VetSearch. This search tool and other specialist databases are particularly suitable for more in-depth literature research.
Library registration
You may use the library’s reading and study areas without prior registration. However, to borrow or order items through the catalog, you must complete a one-time registration free of charge using your TiHo card. Your TiHo card will then serve as your library card.
Please bring your ID card (or passport together with a residence registration certificate) and the completed registration form when registering. The library’s Terms of Use and Fee Schedule apply. The form and additional information are available on our website at Borrowing and ordering.
Note: Your library membership is not linked to the duration of your studies. Please inform us promptly of any changes to your personal details.
Library account
After registering, you will have your own library account, which you can access through the library catalogue. Through this account, you can view your personal details and borrowed items, order or reserve items, and renew loan periods. To log in, you’ll need your 10-digit ID number (located on the back of your TiHo card below the barcode) and your password (by default, your date of birth in the following 6-digit format: DDMMYY).
Further information can be found under the tab Borrowing and ordering.
Borrowing and loan periods
Reference books and textbooks can generally be borrowed for 28 days (except in special cases). You may renew the loan period up to five times, provided that no one else has placed a reservation on the item. Please keep track of your library account and due dates, as overdue fees will be charged if items are not returned or renewed on time.
Returning your items
Your borrowed items can be returned at the service desk during opening hours. Aside from that, you are welcome to use the book return box in front of the entrance.

Access to online resources
On campus, you have unrestricted access to our licensed online resources. This applies both to the computers provided on our premises and to your own devices connected to the university network via Wi-Fi (eduroam, TiHo-Guest). Further registration on the provider’s platform is usually not required.
Even from home or on the go, you can access our licensed online resources. To do so, log in with your IDM credentials via EZproxy or Shibboleth. Which login method is available depends on the specific provider. Both methods work regardless of the device you’re using and do not require any additional software installation.
