Joint research projects with the university institutions in Hannover (Leibniz Universität Hannover (LUH), Hannover Medical School (MHH), Hannover University of Music, Drama and Media) have existed for many years. Several research networks have emerged from the research foci of the TiHo, such as DFG special research areas, DFG research groups or DFG graduate colleges, such as currently "VIPER" (virus detection, pathogenesis and intervention). The "Center for Systemic Neuroscience Hannover" (ZSN), which runs a joint PhD program "Systems Neuroscience" at the TiHo, has been very successful for almost 20 years.

Numerous projects are carried out in cooperation with the University of Göttingen, the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institutes (FLI), the Fraunhofer Institutes or the German Institute of Foodtechnologies (DIL), the Charité and other national and international universities.

Research framework agreements have been concluded with some research institutions such as the Helmholtz Center for Infection Research in Braunschweig (HZI), the Heinrich Pette Institute in Hamburg, the FLI, the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment or the German Primate Center in Göttingen, also as a basis for joint appointments of professorships.

As a further platform for intensive research cooperation, there is a joint institution with the LUH and the MHH, the "Lower Saxony Center for Biomedical Engineering, Implant Research and Development" (NIFE). In addition, there is the Research Alliance for Biomedical Translational Alliance in Lower Saxony (TRAIN), in which the TiHo participates with other universities and research institutions from the Hannover-Braunschweig region.

Furthermore, the TiHo is a member of the German Center for Infection Research (DZIF e.V.), under whose umbrella about 150 scientists from 27 institutions at seven locations cooperate.

In the course of the Corona pandemic, working groups from the University of Göttingen, the MHH, the HZI and the TiHo have joined forces to form the COVID-19 Research Network Lower Saxony (COFONI) in order to pool Lower Saxony's expertise in corona research and to develop strategies for dealing with future pandemics. The establishment of the joint project is supported by the MWK with 8.4 million euros.

In addition, the TiHo participates in doctoral programs at other universities and there are also many projects that are carried out in international cooperation or with industry.

The excellent networking of researchers at the TiHo provides an excellent basis for international or interdisciplinary research projects. This is demonstrated by the high participation in collaborative research projects, especially at EU level, which currently extends to memberships in 12 consortia in Horizon2020 projects alone. An indication of the high international reputation of the TiHo and the high attractiveness of the TiHo as a research institution or research partner is shown by the Humboldt Ranking 2020. Including the number of professorships at the respective scientific university, the TiHo is ranked 12th in Germany and 9th in the field of life sciences.
