Classical swine fever (CSF) is a highly contagious viral disease affecting domestic and wild pigs worldwide with highly variable clinical signs and death rates. Due to the severe economic consequence, the disease is notifiable to the world organization for animal health (OIE).
In 1980, the Institute of Virology, Veterinary School Hannover (today: University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover, Foundation) was nominated:
- as European Union Reference Laboratory (EURL) for Classical Swine Fever (CSF) and
- as OIE Reference Laboratory for CSF
