Project description

The investigation area of this project covers a 35 km perimeter around the centre of the future offshore wind farm "Butendiek". The flight surveys will be coordinated temporally with the construction activities in order to be able to evaluate the visual recordings of harbour porpoises during the noise intensive pile-driving of the wind turbine foundations. The flights are to be conducted when weather and sighting conditions allow reliable data acquisitions of the harbour porpoises. At the same time, the devices of the static acoustic monitoring, so-called POD stations, will be deployed in the same area for another project to enable long-term recording of the animals.

The method of the planned flight surveys is based on the line transect method of distance sampling established for marine mammals. The registration of the harbour porpoises is conducted by a suitable aircraft with constant speed and altitude on previously defined transects within the investigation area.

For each flight day the harbour porpoise population density in the investigation area is to be determined, and additionally, a spatial high-resolution model of the harbour porpoise distribution is to be modelled via additive models.

As long as timed pile-driving protocols are available, the continuously gathered chronological high-resolution acoustic data of the POD stations should enable a modelling of the pile-driving effects on harbour porpoises. These results should be discussed in connection with the density modelling and allow spatial (flight counts) as well as temporal (acoustic POD measurements) high-resolution conclusions on possible effects on the local harbour porpoise population.
