Project description

Monitoring and status assessments of marine vertebrates serve as the basis for meeting the Natura 2000 reporting requirements and supplying data to the regional seas conventions OSPAR and the Helsinki Convention as well as the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD ). The reporting requirements for the German North and Baltic Seas concern particularly seabirds, marine mammals and fish. The prerequisite for the evaluation is the collection of data from long-term monitoring of biodiversity, with focus on the exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

The task spectrum is divided into specialized tasks and conducted by expert investigators. The ITAW is in charge of the monitoring and the evaluation of marine mammals. Data of distribution and density of marine mammals are collected regularly using standardized aerial surveys. The project includes recent results and continuously implements updated parameters.

The aim of the project is to serve as scientific basis to the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN ) in order to fulfill the reporting requirements and other implementation tasks (e.g. the assessment of anthropogenic impacts) in the EEZ.

Scientific work will be continued in the follow-up project "Top space".
