Project description

In order to assess and monitor the positive status of Baltic marine mammals, indicators for the determination of the good environmental status (GES) shall be developed further in the framework of HELCOM. These shall contribute a substantial input to an improved protection of Baltic marine mammals and therefore to the support of the EU´s Marine Strategy Framework Directive.

All assessments require a profound knowledge of the Baltic marine mammal health and reproduction status. Scientists of the Institute for Terrestrial and Aquatic Wildlife Research (ITAW), the German Oceanographic Museum (DMM) in Stralsund and Hel Marine Station (HMS) have collected the most comprehensive samples and data regarding the harbour porpoise health status in the HELCOM area as well as grey seals, harbour seals and ringed seals in the southern HELCOM areas.
These data and samples, which are kept at the ITAW, DMM and HMS, shall be analysed in the framework of this project in order to propose health status parameters for southern Baltic marine mammals.

The results shall serve the scientific gain of knowlege concerning reliable indicators for the assessment and monitoring of the health status of marine mammal populations.
