Shima Baien

Shima Baien studied Veterinary Medicine at the Sudan University of Science and Technology (SUST) in Sudan, and graduated with a Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine & Surgery (2008). She received her Masters degree in Microbiology at the University of Khartoum in 2014 with a thesis entitled “Aerobic Bacteria Associated with Infectious Coryza –like Disease in Chickens’’

In October 2015, Shima joined the Institute of Physiological Chemistry at the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover as a PhD student within the ‘’ Animal Zoonotic Infections’’ program. Her project is entitled ‘’ Impact of traditional medicinal plants on host-pathogen interaction during Staphylococcus aureus infections’’. The thesis is supervised by Prof. Dr. Maren von Köckritz-Blickwede from the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover.

Her goal is to search for medicinal plants with the ability to boost the host immune defence against bacterial infections, focusing on S. aureus skin infections and bovine mastitis, which has been neglected in developing countries of Africa, especially in Sudan.
