Dr Graham Brogden graduated from Keele University, UK, in 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in Biology and Geography. During this time he spent a semester at Brock University, Canada, and wrote a thesis on the effects of cadmium on the eggs of a carp parasite Bothriocephalus acheilognathi. From 2007-2008 he studied for an MRes at Keele University with seven months spent abroad at Wageningen University, The Netherlands, under Prof Geert Wiegertjes investigating the innate immune responses of carp and submitting a thesis titled: ‘The production of a recombinant form of carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) Tumor Necrosis Factor α1 and α2 in a Eukaryotic system.’
After graduating, he started his PhD research in 2009 funded by an EU Marie Curie ITN grant supervised by Prof Dieter Steinhagen in the Fish Disease Research Unit, and in collaboration with Prof Hassan Naim and Prof Maren von Köckritz-Blickwede from the Department of Physiological Chemistry, at the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover, Germany. In December 2013 he was awarded his PhD in Veterinary research and animal biology after submitting a thesis titled: ‘Cell-pathogen interactions in common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.): Studies on cell membrane and neutrophil responses’.
Since 2012, he has been funded by an EU lifelong learning grant working in the Department of Physiological Chemistry on case study based E-learning. Current research topics include host-pathogen interactions in fish and mammals, lipid modulation and analysis via HPTLC and HPLC, antimicrobial neutrophil extracellular traps, virus entry, lysosomal storage diseases and E-learning
