Self-Teaching Programme Histology

Introduction

The self-teaching programme "Histology" was developed at the Department of Anatomy, Hanover School of Veterinary Medicine, as a supplement to conventional teaching materials like textbook, photo atlas and slide collection of the department. It was designed as a help for the students in their pre-clinical semesters in order to accompany lessons and practical courses, and to be used in repetition for exams. Students in the clinical part of the currriculum are given a quick opportunity to actualize their knowledge so that they may find easier access to histopathology.

The self-teaching programme is written in HTML (Hypertext Markup Language), which is the language of the World Wide Web. HTML is a simple language for text processing. With HTML, it is possible to link processed images with explanatory text, and vice versa: just click on the emphasized text or on the "?" in click sensitive pictures! Thus, the user is not only able to browse trough the text in a linear way (like in a book), but also to go through it in arbitrary directions by choice of coloured keywords ("context-sensitive hyperlinks"). For better orientation symbols are placed on all pages. The symbols can be found at the beginning and at the end of every page. If you click on them with the left mouse button you will execute the following actions:

Takes you to the next page
Takes you to the previous page
Brings you to a higher section
Shows all documents of the programme in form of an index diagramm. In the index diagramm your current position is highlighted with the colour turquoise. By clicking on a field of the diagramm you get to any section you desire.
Gives you a detailed table of contents like in a book.
If there is no navigation symbol available in a histological image, please use the "Back"-button in the browser's toolbar. In some configurations the "Back"-button might not be available either. In this case you get back via the pulldown menue (e.g. Netscape: "Go" ... "Back"; Mosaic: "Navigate" ... "Back")

Frequently you will find the following symbol following a hyperlink: (, 77K)
It means that there is a colour image connected with it. The number behind the symbol gives the size of the image in kilobyte. Thus, modem users and users of slow Internet connections may estimate the time that it will take until the image is completely build up on the screen depending on the current traffic on the net.

As regards the chapter "Connective Tissues", it is presented in German. The first half of it has already been translated into an english version. When reaching the end of the English text, you will find explanations how to continue in the German version or how to navigate to other parts of the programme in English. For the future further chapters on epithelia and nervous tissue are planned.

We hope you enjoy browsing through this new medium! Your critique and your suggestions is most welcome. Just send an e-mail to Prof. Dr. R. Schwarz or Dr. M. Wenthe by clicking on the names of the authors.
